James Thomas Hartford, M.D.
August 15, 1928-August 10, 2010

Dr. James Hartford died at home August 10th. He was 81 years old--just 5 days short of celebrating his 82nd birthday with his family.

James was born August 15, 1928, in Denver, CO, to Ruth Farrell Hartford and Daniel Hartford, Sr. He was orphaned as a child, thus his grade school through high school years were lived in orphanages, where he excelled academically and athletically, playing varsity football, basketball and baseball. He came to Oregon to attend the University of Portland on a full football scholarship playing all four of his undergraduate years, and graduating with a B.A. in Business Administration. Dr. Hartford enlisted and served four years in the US Navy (1951-1955), primarily on the Bon Home Richard and the Gardner's Bay. Upon completing his naval service, he returned to the University of Portland and earned a B.S. in Pre-Med., and subsequently graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1961. He completed his Medical Internship while serving in the US Army at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, WA. His compassion for children led him complete a Medical Residency at the University of Oregon Medical School in Pediatrics in 1964. Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, he was awarded Life Member Status by the Oregon Medical Association. He greatly enjoyed his many years of service mentoring medical students as a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at OHSU.

Dr. Hartford began his pediatric medicine practice in Beaverton in 1964. For over forty years he practiced pediatrics in Beaverton and Tigard. Beloved by his young patients and their parents, his practice grew to embrace many third generation families. His free time was devoted to time with his family, friends, and hobbies.

Dr. Hartford is survived by his wife of 31 years, The Reverend Christine Riley; by children: Ruth Hartford Mackey, Joyce Hartford, John Hartford, Molly Hartford Dickson, Timothy Hartford, Ryan Hartford, Nathan Juttelstad, and Elizabeth Riley-Hartford; his siblings: Nadine McCoy, Howard Hartford, Daniel Hartford, Jr., Patrick Hartford, and Geri Cooney; brother-in law: James Riley, Jr.; his wider family; and the hundreds of children and families for whom he cared for so many years. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Shirley Hartford Deiss, his brothers John Hartford, and Leo Hartford.

A Memorial Service and Life Celebration will be held September 1st at 2pm at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Washington County, 22785 NW Birch Street, Hillsboro, OR. 97124. (503- 648-1720). A reception and time of fellowship will follow. The church is fully accessible to those with physical challenges.
